Unexpectedly for a work that is incomplete without the work to which it refers, INDEX-SYSTEM‘s opening generated a great deal of discussion about individual objects as gateways to a mind. We talked about intimacy, memory and insight. I found that I was reluctant to delve into memories so explicitly evoked by many of the objects, so accustomed had I become to seeing them as elements of a generative whole. Most intriguing for me was hearing about how other writers and artists orient themselves to the work that they create, to the workings behind the object or the text, to the ideas that are resolved and the ones that got away.
