Stavros Messinis‘ photopoetry series ‘ILAND’ explores the concept of homeland. It is inspired by Cavafy’s poem ‘Ithaca’ and Homer’s epic poem ‘Odyssey’. It is a visual journey to a photopoetic homeland. This photopoetic composition consists of black and white photography (photopoems) and colour images/video stills. Aesthetically the project is influenced by the Japanese ‘Provoke’ photography movement, and abstract expressionist artists. High contrast, marks, swirls and scratches, added to the images with analogue or digital manipulation representing a personal expression and comment on the notions explored.

Join me at the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture on Saturday 30 April 2022 where I will offer some words to launch Stavros’ photobook, within his exhibition space.
