“Anthony Albanese, Australia’s prime minister, landed in London this week to catch up with his political soulmate, Sir Keir Starmer.

“He has been a regular visitor to Britain since taking office just over three years ago, having attended both the funeral of Elizabeth II and the coronation of King Charles.

“For some, that may seem surprising…

“But the [Australian Republic] Movement’s Anatolitis reckons that if Albanese does go for a referendum, history is on his side.

“At a whole series of turning points in Australian history, at each one of these really pivotal Australia-changing moments, we chose independence,” she says.

“At none of those times did we either choose Britain or the Royal family. We chose doing something in our own way.”
